The Felipe Salles Sextet

Based in the United States since 1995, Felipe Salles has been developing work born out of the need to find a new language within modern jazz. The usual mix of influences between jazz and Brazilian music derives almost always from bossa nova or chorinho, two of the best-known songs in Brazil, and from the jazz side of bebop. Influences such as avant-garde jazz, hard bop, music from the Northeast or even a more polyrhythmic approach to African heritage were little explored in their fusion with Brazilian rhythms and harmonies.

Music is a language spoken in many different dialects and accents. The combinations and results are infinite and are enriched in a dialectical evolutionary process. Jazz is, for Felipe Salles, the vehicle that translates and unifies diverse influences and musical heritages.During his career in the United States, Felipe recorded 9 albums to critical acclaim. The famous Downbeat Magazine defined Felipe’s music as “creating pieces that reconcile intriguing complexity with lively rhythms and exuberant colors” and “his success in translating this approach into a more agile small band, without losing richness or diversity”. A review from Jazz Times magazine says that “Felipe Salles blends the visceral and the cerebral on his fascinating fifth album, infusing classic modernist lines with the dynamic rhythms of his Brazilian homeland.” The formation of the Felipe Salles group is an example of this cultural wealth.

Musicians from all over the world who truly understand Felipe’s concept and can play his music with finesse and personality give this group a unique sound. Felipe Salles’ group includes talented and versatile musicians such as Uruguayan pianist Nando Michelin, German drummer Bertram Lehmann and American bassist Keala Kaumeheiwa. Joining this sextet project are Australian trumpetist Nadje Noordhuis (Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue) and American trombonist and vocalist Natalie Cressman (Trey Anastasio, Anat Cohen).

In January 2022, Felipe Salles recorded the above video in the then under construction Drake.
