Across his rollicking new LP Big Jefe, Jack Blocker fully embraces the rough-edged Americana spirit that’s called to him from the start. The 28-year-old singer-songwriter muses on nights out drinking, making mistakes, and life on the road across the project’s eleven tracks. Blocker didn’t set out to make a concept album. During his first winter in Nashville, he started writing a new tune over a few pours of whiskey – one that made him chuckle and feel excited about songwriting again. The song became “Big Jefe,” Blocker’s first ever single that tells the tale of a reckless, drunken miscreant named Jefe, released in 2023. He started dreaming up a world around that story, inspired in part by Willie Nelson’s 1975 concept album Red Headed Stranger, as well as country singer-songwriters like Marty Robbins and Townes Van Zandt.
A native of Richardson, Texas, Blocker grew up playing music in church. When a friend with an impressive vinyl collection played him records by songwriting greats like Johnny Cash, he started writing music of his own. After playing shows in college, he moved to Nashville in 2022 to pursue music full-time and never looked back. In addition to his own headline shows, Blocker opened for artists like Shane Smith and the Saints, Molly Tuttle, Hayes Carll and Drake Milligan, with live shows serving as deep inspiration for Big Jefe.
Produced by Patrick Lyons (Colter Wall, Noeline Hofmann), Big Jefe is about transformation. It’s a story about a drifter – a broke drunkard searching for purpose. Drawn into the drug trade out of perceived necessity, he chases opportunity and transforms a struggle for survival into an unlikely rise to power as Big Jefe. Big Jefe is set for a November 6 release via Thirty Tigers / Elbow Grease Records. It’s Blocker’s first project with Thirty Tigers, marking an exciting new chapter in his career.
Already a veteran of the road at 28, Blocker’s sound sits at the intersection of outlaw country, Americana folk, and the Texas singer-songwriter tradition. Last year, he released his debut album, The Land On Most High, produced by Big Jefe producer Patrick Lyons and released on his own label, Elbow Grease Records and his intentional songwriting and authentic storytelling have earned recognition from SiriusXM and fans across the country.
